Specifications Synonyms: D-(−)-α-Aminobenzylpenicillin saltA β-lactam antibiotic with an amino group side chain attached to the penicillin structure, 6-amino-penicillanic acid. A semi-synthetic penicillin derivative that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Bactericidal only to growing Escherichia coli. Resistance is mediated by cleavage of β-lactam ring of ampicillin by β-lactamase. More active against Gram-negative bacteria. Recommended for antibacterial use in cell culture media and selection of resistant bacteria. Used as a selective agent for plasmid transformation such as pBR322 and pUC derivatives.USP GradeMelting point: 198-200°CPotency: 900-1050 μg/mgMoisture: 12-15%pH (1% water): 3.5-6.0Appearance: SolidBoiling Point: 683.9 °C at 760 mmHg (Predicted)Melting Point: 198-200 °C (lit.)(dec.)RTECS Number: XH8425000Molecular Weight403.45 g/molMolecular FormulaC16H19N3O4S•3H2OCAS7177-48-2HazardHarmfulStorage-20°CSolubilitySoluble in 1 M HCl (50 mg/ml), water (10 mg/ml), and ethanol (slightly soluble).
