This classic method demonstrates and measures the small force experienced by a conductor carrying an electric current in a magnetic field. One half of the balance is placed inside a solenoid, while the other half features an adjustable counterweight that can hold light additional masses. When an external power supply provides current to both the balance and the solenoid, the balance deflects. By adding light masses until balance is restored, the force on the conductor can be measured.
