This kit provides students with a comprehensive understanding of voltaic cells and reduction-oxidation reactions by guiding them to create their own experiments. The kit includes a detailed activity guide and student worksheet master copies, allowing students to develop their scientific creativity by designing investigative questions, hypotheses, and experimental procedures. In the first activity, students set up and familiarize themselves with voltaic cells using provided worksheets. They then apply their knowledge to make observations regarding the apparatus and develop their own experiments in a guided fashion. When used with middle school students, this kit serves as a visual demonstration of chemical energy converting into electrical energy by illuminating a 1V bulb when connecting the two electrodes. Components included in this kit are: plastic jar with lip, electrode brackets, iron (Fe), tin (Sn), carbon rod, nickel (Ni), two zinc (Zn) electrodes, aluminum (Al), and copper (Cu) electrodes, as well as a porous cup. Note that the following components are required but not included: electrolyte solution (e.g., acetic acid or dilute sulfuric acid), multimeter, 1M aqueous solution of copper sulfate (CuSO4), and 1M aqueous solution of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4).
