N-terminal active peptide fragment of the native hormone that functions as a regulatory factor in the homeostatic control of Ca2 and phosphate metabolism. Regulates Ca2 and phosphate flux across cellular membranes in bone and kidney, resulting in increased serum Ca2 levels. Increases the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Increases tubular reabsorption of Ca2 and stimulates renal hydroxylation of 25-(OH)-Vitamin D3 to 1,25-(OH)2-Vitamin D3. Increases the production of inhibitory IGF binding protein 4 in bone cells.
