Details

Gypsum is a sulfate mineral that often forms from evaporating lakes, creating an evaporite deposit. Its crystals grow into soft, wide sheets, but it can also be found filling veins and fractures in other rocks. Ideal for geology classrooms, gypsum is one of the standards on the Mohs hardness scale, making its similar appearance to other minerals useful in identification exercises. Each specimen is carefully selected and hand-processed by an experienced geologist to ensure that each sample exhibits defining features. Our rock and mineral samples are sourced from various locations around the world and are processed locally in Victor, NY. Each specimen is individually packaged in a transparent bag and labeled with a barcode for easy identification. This raw gypsum specimen measures approximately 1 inch in length and is ideal for identification and classification exercises. The perpendicular planes of cleavage make it an excellent tool for studying 2-plane, 90° cleavage. While each specimen may vary slightly in shape, size, and color, every one is carefully selected and hand-processed to ensure that it exhibits defining features. Technical support is always available from our team of scientists and geologists, who are happy to provide additional information or assist with any questions regarding our rock and mineral samples.
