Details

This apparatus consists of a metal rod mounted on a holder and a brass gauge, ideal for classroom demonstrations of thermal expansion and cooling contraction of metals. The gauge features three distinct measurements: a horizontal slot slightly longer than the metal rod, a circular hole with a diameter slightly greater than that of the rod, and a notch with a width slightly less than the rod's diameter. The apparatus measures 4 inches wide and 9.5 inches tall, including the handle, while the gauge measures 4.5 inches tall and 5.75 inches wide. Designed for introducing thermal expansion and cooling contraction concepts, this device allows you to demonstrate how the metal rod's dimensions can exceed those of the unheated slot and circular hole when heated. Conversely, the notch can accommodate the unheated rod's diameter when the surrounding metal is heated. Note that a high temperature (e.g., from a Bunsen burner) is required for sufficient expansion, and this apparatus should be used with a heatproof holder for the gauge and a heat-resistant surface to receive the heated components after use.
