Apoptosis is a genetically programmed, selective process of cell death that occurs during normal cell differentiation and development of multicellular organisms. Viruses depend on the biosynthetic machinery of their host cell for the production of progeny and survival. Therefore, many viruses encode proteins that protect the cell from apoptosis. hILP ( h uman I AP- l ike p rotein) is a human homologue of the viral IAP ( I nhibitor of A poptosis P rotein). hILP is a widely expressed cytoplasmic protein of 497 amino acids with three BIR (Baculovirus IAP repeats) domains and a C-terminal RING finger domain. hILP-transfected cells are protected against the apoptotic effects of Sindbis virus infection and ICE (interleukin-1 β; converting enzyme) expression. Other applications were tested at BD Biosciences Pharmingen during antibody development only or reported in the literature.
